What does “fixe” mean? The coolest word you'll hear in Porto

In Portugal, there is a word that says it all: fixe.
If something is good, fun, or you simply like it, you'll say “fixe”.
“A festa foi fixe” (The party was awesome).
“Eles já chegaram, fixe!” (They have arrived, awesome!).

Although it is used throughout the country, in Porto you'll hear it on every corner, from a café by the Douro River to a chat among friends in the Ribeira bars. It's one of those expressions that perfectly summarizes the character of the people from Porto: friendly, spontaneous, and with that touch of calm joy that is so unique to them.

A bit of history

Originally, fixe meant “fixed” or “constant”, but over time it adopted the meaning that all Portuguese people understand today as something “cool”, “pleasant”, or “nice”. Even in the 1920s, it was used with that positive connotation that it maintains to this day.
